To mark the formal end of the Esch2022 European Capital of Culture project, various official final reports and an illustrative publication for the general public have now been published and handed over to the European Commission Just over a year ago, Esch2022, together with Kaunas2022 and NoviSad2022, have passed on the title of European Capital of Culture in Athens to their successors; for the first time in this form in the history of the "ECoCs".

Recently, another ceremony was held at the Acropolis Museum in the presence of numerous title holders from the almost 40-year history of the European Capitals of Culture as well as representatives from the European Commission.

Once again, it became clear that these are not large events that last for only about a year, but rather a network of long-term projects that bring sustainable change to regions across Europe. Much will remain: new places and spaces for culture, concepts that are further developed, networks that are maintained and individual projects that are continued.

The final Esch2022 reports that have now been published reflect exactly this for the cross-border region. The Esch2022 management carried out a step-by-step evaluation and presentation of the results.

A first presentation took place on the occasion of the official closing event on 22.12.2022; a second one in January 2023 on the occasion of the 'handover' ceremony, the moment when the municipalities of the PRO-SUD consortium and the French municipalities of the CCPHVA (Communauté de Communes Pays Haut Val d'Alzette), which were jointly European Capital of Culture 2022, took over responsibility for the project and its legacy.

At a press conference in May, the results of the project partners' reports, various surveys, studies and statistics were presented. The final reports and impact studies submitted to the European Commission were published together with the publication 'Past Forward' and can be downloaded online as an attachment to this news item.

"To pay tribute to the legacy of Esch2022 in the future, we have developed a logo that all project partners can continue to use, and we have invited them to do so," says Nancy Braun, Director General of Esch2022. "Many are already communicating about the continuation and further development of their projects or places that were created in the course of the European Capital of Culture. It makes everyone involved - initiators, protagonists, supporters, citizens and guests* - proud and reminds future generations that it is worth nurturing ideas like seeds so that they can grow and take roots, beyond the usual borders.”
