Žilina is a natural centre of north-western Slovakia and with a population of 84 604 inhabitants (as per December 31, 2010) it ranks among the largest cities in Slovakia. Žilina is situated around 200 km from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

The city of Žilina is advancing to the 2nd round in the European Capital of Culture 2026 competition. Along with Žilina, the cities of Nitra and Trenčín were also shortlisted.

In 2026, the Slovak Republic will host the title of European Capital of Culture (ECOC). This prestigious title will be shared in 2026 by two cities from two European Union (EU) Member States: one Slovak and one Finnish.
