Artistic messages of peace and help to refugees from Ukraine are a new initiative of the ‘Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation.

Through its residential programme ‘Artist in Residence’, an open call has been sent to artists from Ukraine to stay and create in Novi Sad, in the field of visual arts and literature. For that occasion, the Foundation will provide them with accommodation and all the necessary materials for work.

For the first time, the works by leading names in national art such as Uroš Predić and Paja Jovanović, the greats of European art El Greco, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun and Marc Chagall, as well as contemporary artists Mladen Miljanović, Vladan Jeremić, Rene Redle, Safet Zec and Taus Makhacheva will be presented in this year’s European Capital of Culture.

Migrations and the positive consequences of people moving, the richness of diversity and its impact on art, are the themes of the new programme arch ‘Migrations’, which started on 1st february and with which Novi Sad, as the European Capital of Culture, continues with the cultural events in 2022. In the next 45 days, Serbian Athens will present the migrational identity of Novi Sad, Serbia, and Europe through more than 300 events. Around 130 artists will present themselves through various art genres, 90 of which are from different European countries.

By celebrating the great names of Serbian science, through art and culture, Novi Sad became the European Capital of Culture. More than 400 artists from Serbia and Europe, through Doček – a singular artistic celebration in Europe, reached zenith together with the audience, showing just how the heritage of those that influenced not just Europe but the whole world – Mileva Marić Einstein, Milutin Milanković, Dragiša Brašovan and Ljubomir Micić, should be kept and promoted.

As is now known, in 2022 there will be three European capitals of culture, Novi Sad, kaunas and Esch. The first city to inaugurate the program will be Novi Sad, on January 13 at 20.22. Kaunas will follow on January 22 and then Esch on February 22 with a ceremony that will culminate on February 26. Today focus on the Opening Ceremony of Novi Sad.
