Timisoara 2023, Light whispers in the silence

Timisoara Light Festival Timisoara Light Festival

As part of the Timisoara 2023 cultural programme, the exhibition Light whispers in the silence by artists Dorian Bolca, Andrei Bucovanu, RIZI & Dorin Cucicov, Sergiu Doroftei, and Calin Topa will open on 10 October at 8pm at the the MV Sci-Art Cultural Center (Timișoara, bd. Mihai Viteazu, nr.1).

Light whispers in the silence explores the complex relationship between space, light and sound and the ways in which these elements intensify each other to construct intersecting personal and collective narratives. Through immersive light and sound installations, the artists explore ways of interacting with the materiality of light to reveal the depth and complexity of our shared space. Public or private space is not static, but is reconfigured by our interactions with it and the thoughts and memories we fill it with. Space is regulated by its sound resonance and sometimes by its 'tactility' and smell. Light, on the other hand, enhances and materialises it, becoming an experiential element that contributes to its dynamisation and the configuration of architectural compositions.

The exhibition seeks to create environments that heighten awareness of individuals' sensory experiences, challenging them to explore the materiality of light and sound in relation to the space they occupy. Beyond waves and rays, sound and light are more than natural elements; they are a dynamic and multifaceted medium that reconfigures our perception of space. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the exhibition is an invitation to reconsider the ways in which we listen and observe, how we inhabit space, and how we engage with the sound and light environments that surround us.

Without light, the eyes cannot see any shape, colour, space or movement. Light is not only an illuminating force, but also a guide in the perception of space, a transforming agent that shapes and redefines the world around us. The way we experience a space is transformed by our encounters with light and its ability to evoke emotion. "Light (...) is an inherent quality of the sky, the earth and the objects that populate it, and their luminosity is periodically obscured or muffled by darkness" - Rudolf Arnheim.

The MV Sci-Art Cultural Center is a first not only for Timisoara, but also for Romania, as it is the first joint initiative of the artistic organization META Spatiu and Politehnica University, an initiative that constantly supports collaborations between science and art at university level and will bring together professionals from both spheres. META Spațiu's branded MV-Sci Art contemporary art galleries offer a diverse and inspiring range of contemporary conceptual artworks, with both weekday and weekend opening hours.
