Two-time Grammy winner, Evelyn Glennie, will perform together with Szilárd Mezei, a musician and composer from Senta, who performs and composes contemporary improvised music, and the Polar Quartet, made of Szilárd Mezei – viola, Bogdan Ranković – clarinet, bass clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, Ivan Burka – vibraphone, marimba, percussion, and Ervin Malina – double bass. Before the improvisation with Szilárd Mezei, Glennie will also perform the ‘Piece for Dance’ by the composer James Keane, which was composed just for her.

In 2018, Evelyn Glennie and Szilárd Mezei recorded an album of improvised music called The Core-tet Project with two other excellent improvisers Jon Hemmersam and Michael Jefry Stevens. This will be their first joint performance in front of an audience as part of the ‘Creative Embassies and Ambassadors’ project, a goal of which is to connect major world stars with artists from Serbia.

A Unique Inclusive Workshop with Evelyn Glennie

An extraordinary inclusive workshop Feel the Sound, led by world-renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie, will be held on 8 October at the ‘Isidor Bajić’ Music School, at 11 a.m. The workshop is intended for musicians, music teachers, dancers, special education teachers, activists, and everyone who is actively involved in music and inclusion. In addition to basic musical knowledge about percussion, the aim of the workshop is to help participants recognise and develop their potential, improve tools for using music in creating inclusion, and provide a different approach to art. The duration of the workshop is 90 minutes and will be held in English, with translation into Serbian sign language.

Evelyn Glennie has been deaf since the age of twelve and performs barefoot in order to feel the music with her whole body. She is also known for holding percussion workshops. Her mission is to teach the world to really listen and to provide a different perspective on experiencing music.

The Other? Europe programme arch will be the grand finale of the European Capital of Culture. From 7 October to 27 November, it will raise questions about dominant values in European culture and art and lead to the discovery of different, alternative, marginalised, minority and rebellious expressions.
