Liepāja and Évora, European Capitals of Culture in 2027, strengthen cooperation. The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding was held on 14 April, at 10 a.m., at the Palácio D. Manuel, in Évora, as part of the State Visit of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Latvia to Portugal.

With the aim of promoting cooperation in the field of work as European Capitals of Culture, the cities of Liepāja, Latvia, and Évora, Portugal, both designated with the title in 2027, signed a memorandum of understanding in Évora. The event is part of the state visit of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Latvia, Egils Levit, to Portugal, which included a visit to Évora.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the mayors of Liepāja, Gunārs Ansiņš, and Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá, at a ceremony attended by Inta Šoriņa, president of the Liepāja 2027 Foundation, and Paula Mota Garcia, coordinator of the Évora 2027 mission group.

The document focuses in particular on cooperation on cultural projects that meet the key objectives of the European Capital of Culture, such as the socio-economic development of cities, the strengthening of local identity through culture and the sharing of common European values. The memorandum also encourages exchange programmes and capacity building of cultural and educational organisations, among other aspects.

Assuming itself to be a 'city of paradoxes and opposites', Liepāja 2027 places the concept of (non-)rest at the basis of a bold cultural and artistic programme designed to respond to regional, national and European challenges. Similarly, crossing different scales (local, national and European), Évora 2027 proposes VAGAR - the full realisation that we, human beings, are always one with the universe - as a future and urgent response to the challenges facing humanity, as 'another art of existence'.

Évora 2027, European Capital of Culture, is promoted by the Évora 2027 Executive Committee, led by the Municipality of Évora. The other institutions that are part of it are the Alentejo Regional Directorate of Culture, the University of Évora, the Intercommunal Community of Central Alentejo, the Alentejo Regional Development Coordination Commission, the Alentejo Regional Tourism Board (ERT), the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation and the Alentejo Regional Agency for Tourism Promotion (ARPTA). Évora 2027 is supported by the four inter-municipal communities of Alentejo, representing the 47 municipalities of the region.
