"Airfare - Digital Pathways for Cultural Innovation" is the winning project of the Public Notice TOCC (Digital Transition Cultural and Creative Organisations) Action A1 of the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of Italian Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union - NextGenerationEU, presented by the BAD (Basilicata Digital Academy) network composed of the Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation (lead partner), Matera Municipality, Confapi Matera, CNA Matera, ITS Academy Foundation of Basilicata.

Airfare aims to produce innovation from a dynamic concept of "cultural heritage," understood as a participatory and generative tool for new cultural products through the use of digital. Airfare addresses the entire supply chain of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in order to create a unified hub of cultural production in the area and, through design thinking and co-design processes, strengthen the skills of operators, encourage cooperation and exchange of experiences, facilitate professional upgrading and retraining, and improve the entire eco-system. The proposing entities represent the various spheres of CCI-cultural producers and artists (Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation), small and medium-sized enterprises (Confapi), and artisans (CAN Matera)- and offer cutting-edge tools and laboratories for the development of digital solutions, such as the Cte Matera (Matera Municipality), Open Design School (Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation) and ITS Academy Foundation of Basilicata.

The Airfare project will take place over a 24-month period, benefiting from funding of €288,000.00, plus co-financing of €72,000.00, for a total value of €360,000.00.

Actions:

MEDIA DIGITAL LIBRARY (24 months, March 2024 to February 2026): Development of an integrated platform for access to digital cultural resources that enables navigation of the enormous information context of cultural heritage, constantly enriched by digitization activities.

DIGITAL CULTURAL CATALOGUE (12 months, May 2024 to May 2025): Workshops for co-creation and digital cultural production (artistic/craft artifact, installation, event, etc.) aimed at creating multimedia productions capable of integrating different digital expression techniques (e.g. augmented reality).

DIGITAL ARTISTIC CURATING (9 months, November 2024 - June 2025): A non-formal information/education course on digital artistic curating, aimed at training a new professional figure (digital curator), who can deal with digital art, with works generated through artificial intelligence and with cultural heritage, material and immaterial, digitized and manipulated by artists and creative people. Identification of new professional profiles that can play a key role in CCI innovation processes.

ARTISAN MANUFACTURING (6 months, from September 2024 to February 2025):

FABLAB IN PILLS: A series of informal meetings, open to a diverse and multidisciplinary audience (students, designers, architects, entrepreneurs, artisans) aimed at learning about digital fabrication tools and techniques. Topics: 3D printing, Solidworks, Inkscape, Laser cutter, Robot line follower, Arduino.

ARTIGI@NE RESIDENCIES: Creative residencies in artisan workshops. Selection of designers, by announcement, who will "go to the workshop" in residency for one month. A process of mutual empowerment, hybridization and exchange of skills aimed at innovation of craft processes and products.

INCLUSIVE DIGITAL MANUFACTURING: A series of workshops (challenge-based) for designers, makers and artisans in collaboration with companies to develop design-for-all and silver economy oriented solutions. During the hackathons, challenges set by different target groups (care givers, the elderly, people with disabilities) will be selected, which will indicate the needs to be met and validate the prototyped solutions.
