The Oviedo neighbourhood of Pumarín is hosting this season Creativas: Pumarín, Territorio Artístico, a project grounded in cultural participation and collective creation, aimed at young people aged 16 to 30.

The initiative proposes the use of community art and popular culture as tools for social transformation, local engagement and the construction of wellbeing. Its goal is to activate youth participation, strengthen community ties and generate site-specific artistic proposals connected to the identity and lived realities of the neighbourhood.

Within the framework of Oviedo’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2031, the project embodies one of its core strategic lines: promoting cultural processes that emerge from the territory, reinforce community networks and position citizens as active agents of transformation. Rather than simply programming cultural events, the aim is to generate dynamics that endure and expand over time.

Throughout a process running from January to May, a Core Group of up to 30 young participants works through a horizontal and collaborative methodology alongside invited women artists. Through monthly labs, they explore different artistic languages such as muralism, performance, audiovisual practice and illustration, collectively investigating concepts such as discomfort, wellbeing and sense of belonging. This is not a conventional training programme, but a shared creative process in which young people do not merely take part — they decide and co-create.

The project will culminate on 29 and 30 May with artistic routes open to local residents, transforming Pumarín into a space for encounter and community celebration. Conceived as a pilot experience, Creativas is designed to be replicated in other neighbourhoods across the city, extending a participatory cultural model rooted in the local context and aligned with the values underpinning the Oviedo 2031 bid.
