“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” said Albert Einstein. This is what happened among the volunteer coordinators of the past, present and future European Capitals of Culture (ECoCs). During the first lockdown, the need arose to reconnect, share experiences, emotions and even difficulties to reflect on how cultural volunteering could face this difficult period and continue to be an important resource for the well-being of communities.

The Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation commissioned some independent evaluation studies related to the actions to monitor and evaluate the programme and results of Matera European Capital of Culture 2019.

After having interviewed Steve Green, today we ask the same questions to another Ecocs expert, Sir Bob Scott.

For every euro spent by a cultural tourist in Matera, 1.85 were activated (+ 185%), for every euro invested directly in cultural productions there was a return of 2 € (+ 200%); against an investment in the supply chain most closely linked to cultural production (51% of the resources invested), other economic sectors (49% of the resources) have been stimulated and introduced into the process of creating cultural value.

Today begins a series of interviews with the leading experts of the European Capitals of Culture.
The first one is with Steve Green. Green was appointed Chairman of the European Commission jury to select the European Capital of Culture from 2011 to 2016 and main author of the Guide to Candidates issued by the European Commission.

The national jury appointed by the Minister of Culture, and chaired by Bernard Faivre d'Arcier, auditioned the nine municipalities and groups of municipalities shortlisted for the first edition of the label «Capitale française de la culture».
