It is a historic recognition not only for the municipality, but for the cultural life of the whole of northern Sweden.

To help shape this ambitious journey, the Kiruna2029 project organisation — an internal structure of the Municipality of Kiruna that reports to its own dedicated committee — has opened a series of Open Calls for various professional roles. Among these, the call closest to its deadline is for a Communications Manager, with applications open until September 14.

A 360-degree role
The position calls for an outgoing, communicative person able to move comfortably between different audiences and channels. Whoever is selected will work across the board on communication issues within a large organisation, collaborating with managers, employees and external stakeholders. The main task will be to activate the project's communication strategy, in line with the offer document submitted during the application process, overseeing its implementation and monitoring over time. The role also involves supporting day-to-day operational communication activities and managing one's own assignments independently.

This is a position that requires being based on-site in Kiruna, with possible business travel, for a period of at least six months, with start by agreement and a fixed-term offer running until 1 January 2030 — once the project period ends, the Kiruna2029 organisation will in fact be dissolved.

The profile sought
The Municipality of Kiruna is looking for a candidate with a degree in communication science, an equivalent qualification, or relevant prior experience. Solid knowledge of visual identity, tone of voice and graphic guidelines is required, and experience in the public sector is considered an advantage.

The required skills include operational communication, branding, and the ability to plan, implement and monitor communication activities within complex projects, as well as the ability to adapt messages to different targets and channels. Experience in running training courses and motivating teams is also welcome.

On a personal level, the municipality is looking for proactivity, structured organisational skills, a collaborative spirit, a sense of priorities, and the ability to make well-considered decisions even under changing conditions. Public speaking, both in front of small and large groups, and the ability to build trust are considered essential qualities, as are creativity, pedagogical skills and a holistic vision.

Knowledge of the local and national art and culture scene is an advantage. On the language side, a good command of English and Swedish is required, while knowledge of Sami, Meänkieli or Finnish — administrative languages of the Kiruna area — is considered a plus. Good skills in social media and digital communication are also required, along with basic graphic skills (Canva, Adobe programs or equivalent) and video skills, experience in web publishing (such as WordPress or SiteVision), and a category B driving licence.
