Education, culture, and Europe come together in a pioneering, transnational and inclusive proposal, which the city candidate for European Capital of Culture 2031 also sees as an opportunity to rethink the present and future of Europe from an educational perspective and give a voice to young people.

The competition is in its first phase, aimed at composers from any country. The rules, published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Cáceres (here), require that the composition follow a narrative inspired by European cultural heritage: legends, myths, landscapes, historical figures, customs, musical traditions, or other elements of our cultural memory and diversity. Themes related to shared European values may also be addressed: diversity, cooperation, sustainability, democracy, and common culture.

A professional jury will select the winner, who will receive a prize of €6,600.

The piece must be adapted to the vocal and auditory range of students aged 9 to 12 with no previous choral or music reading experience. It must last between 30 and 40 minutes —no more than 25 minutes of participation by the children's choir— and may incorporate electronic music resources (soundscapes, rhythmic bases, effects) provided they are technically feasible for live performance with accessible means.

‘Cantata Europa’ will be performed by all the students in the class selected at a later stage of the competition.
