Ecoc 2028, hot hours in the Czech Republic

Pilsen, ecoc 2015 Pilsen, ecoc 2015

In some cities of the Czech Republic, the days are very hot and not only due to the high temperatures that are characterizing this summer. The deadline for submitting the dossier that will allow candidate cities to participate in the European Capital of Culture competition for 2028 expires on 1st September.

France, the Czech Republic and Macedonia are the countries that in 2028 will indicate the European capital of culture. Here are the first candidate cities:

Czech Republic: Brno, Liberec, Broumov, Budejovice. France:  Bastia, Reims, Rouen, Roubaix, Bourges, Clermont-Ferrand, Banlieue, Saint Denis, Montpellier, Nice, Lens. Macedonia: Skopje.

Ecocnews, as always, will follow this phase of the competition with great attention.

Meanwhile, our online newspaper offers you an overview of 3 of the four candidate cities that have kindly answered our questions. Unfortunately Budejovice never replied to the interview request sent by EcocNews last March 2nd. But Ecocnews is always available to host an interview with the Budejovice team proposing the same questions that have been proposed to the other three candidate cities.

Good luck to all candidate cities. We feel we are in the second phase of the selection, when the European Capital of Culture of 2028 will be nominated.

The same question is: Why did your city decide to apply for the European capital of culture?

Click on the name of the city to read the full interview.

Liberec

“We decided to apply in order to be able to present Liberec’s culture in a somewhat unconventional way (because Liberec is an unconventional city) – to present what is beautiful but also interesting, special and different, something that has a story. Liberec seems to be a city carefully concealing its secrets. Culture may not be visible at first glance here, but the city has its own elusive atmosphere. Modern architecture mixes with the historical here; it is also an oasis of calm and a place where people from all over the country come for athletic activities, yet the city could also become an ideal location for the creative bustle. Liberec offers a lot of unused space, a chance for a new beginning. They say Liberec is a city you either love or hate. Thanks to ECoC, we want Liberec to be perceived as a city so captivating and of such high quality that everyone will be left with an impression strong enough to entice them to stay, return or move here without necessarily knowing exactly why”.

Brno

“Boasting a vibrant history, prosperous business excellence, 14 flourishing universities and a thriving cultural life, Brno is a city of innovation and diversity. It is at the heart of the South Moravian region and its 400,000 residents make it the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Brno enjoys an unusually rich cultural life, quite exceptional for a city its size. Exhibitions in museums and galleries, plays, concerts, operas, dance performances – the range of possibilities is extraordinarily wide.

We see the competition as an opportunity to accelerate sustainable development of the city of Brno through culture and foster common and shared identity of the Brno's inhabitants when interconnecting all different communities and stakeholders together.  Brno is allready on the map of Europe, lets make the cultural ties to Europe stronger and more relevant”.

Keywords: Nature - space - care

Broumov

“Broumov is historically closely linked with the Benedictine Order and the monastery that the Order built here – thanks to it, the town was a social, cultural and educational centre for its surroundings for a long period of its history. Especially due to historical events in the last century (such as the displacement of the German population after World War II or the socialist period following afterwards), it has slowly lost this importance. Over the last 20 years or so, the town has been slowly returning to its origins – reviving the cultural scene, activating local communities, establishing cross-border cooperation and finding ways to develop the town and the region to increase the quality of life for its inhabitants. The candidacy is an accelerator of this journey, a journey towards what has been the place's own for centuries”.

Keywords: Quality of life, local, communities, resources, development and change, nature and culture.
