Valletta, the cultural capital of Malta, and the European Capital of culture in 2018, is bursting with energy and excitement with a dynamic range of events designed to excite families, artists, film buffs, visitors and more.
This month presents a variety of free events that promise to be inspiring and unforgettable. Highlights include two stunning public art installations celebrating the incredible creativity of local artists. Plus a public sharing event at the Valletta Design Cluster, a truly unique experience not to be missed.
16 April, Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta
With a grand career in singing spanning over 50 years, Mary Spiteri is among the most popular singers, loved by all Maltese and Gozitans. This sold-out show celebrates this iconic Maltese singer, her life and career by means of a repertoire of songs and interviews with the participation of Mary Spiteri and guest singers. Mary Spiteri: My Life is the first biography of the sort to be produced live in a theatre.
City of Colour
The brand-new installation in Valletta’s South Street by Canadian artist Patrick Thompson pays tribute to the street festivals, costumes, and animation of public spaces that have become an integral part of Malta’s rich cultural heritage.
This installation is part of the programme City of Colour, which entails the production of new street art every few months, bringing colour and added vibrancy to the streets of the Capital.
Mixgħela tal-Ġimgħa Mqaddsa
Hundreds of fire bowls will make up a traditional Good Friday installation in St George’s Square, Valletta, from the 5th until the 7th April, creating a space for reflection while serving as an attraction in the heart of Valletta.
Tnejn Għat-Talkies
If it’s the second (10th April) or fourth Monday (24th April) of the month, it’s a Tnejn Għat-Talkies night. This month Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (Giuseppe Tornatore, 1988) and Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, will be shown on the respective dates.
Tnejn Għat-Talkies is organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency, as part of its Strada Stretta programme, and celebrates classic and memorable films in the heart of the Capital.
FIT-3:00PM
Well-known theatre personalities Joseph Galea and Carlos Farrugia are preparing another engaging production which, while going beyond the traditional, links with aspects of Maltese ritual and cult during Holy Week. FIT-3PM is written by Lon Kirkop and will be produced and directed by Joseph Galea and Carlos Farrugia. It takes place from the 31st March until the 9th April at Spazju Kreattiv Theatre.
Arti
Do not miss Arti – the debut performance of the Maltese adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s award-winning comedy ART, that delves into the age-old question “What exactly is Art?”. Translated and directed by Albert Marshall and starring Ray Calleja, Mikhail Basmadjian and Sean Buhagiar, Arti takes place at Splendid, Strait Street, Valletta from the 21st until the 23rd and the 28th until the 30th April.
Endemia
Check out the final outcome of the Valletta Cultural Agency's current InnovAiR project, Endemia, on the 5th April at 6pm, at the Valletta Design Cluster. The event will allow participants to display their sketchbooks from the workshop series and visitors to explore the different locations that were explored during the course of the project.
Artist Nora Byrne will also be demonstrating how to create natural inks with local plants during the event.
