Larnaka 2030, Open call for 12 emerging Mediterranean artists

MedSEA is an international project that focuses on socially engaged art practices as tools for empowering communities in remote areas of the Mediterranean.

Through a month - long residency, 12 emerging artists and culture professionals of various disciplines are invited to work with local communities in Larnaka Cyprus and Sfax Tunisia and create works that will be presented in Mahallart Festival (Larnaka) and Hors - Lits Festival (Sfax).

Each selected artist/professional will receive a stipend of 3.000 euros, that can be used towards production costs and artist’s remuneration, plus traveling expenses, accommodation and meals for 4 weeks and mentoring on the development of their works and p ractices.

What they are looking for: They are looking for 12 emerging artists and culture professionals who are passionate about working with communities, urban realities, people’s memories and oral histories. Artists/professionals that are willing to deep dive into the communities, engage in a process of understanding and co - creation with them and transfo rm this experience in in -situ art works. MedSEA invites artists and culture professionals of diverse disciplines, including performing arts, visual arts, media arts and interdisciplinary pract ices.

The MedSEA project brings together a dynamic consortium of four organisations in the Mediterranean active in socially engaged art practices: Larnaka 2030 European Capital of Culture(Cyprus), Al Badil (Tunisia), Liv.in.g. (Italy) and Busart (Greece) . 1. Programme Structure
Selected applicants will participate in a four - week residency in either Larnaka, Cyprus (05 October 2026 – 01 November 2026) OR Sfax, Tunisia (05 April 2027 – 02 May 2027) .
The residency includes:
a) Community Engagement. Participants will be introduced in the local context through a dedicated process of meetings, walks, and exchanges with residents, curated by the host organisation – Larnaka 2030 European Capital of Culture for Mahallart Festival and Al Badil for Hors - Lits Festival.
b) Webinars and Workshops
• Mentorship & Peer learning
• Participation in 5 Webinars on Community - based and Socially – engaged practices (before, during, and after the residency period)
• Participation in 2 workshops (based on location):  Larnaka: “Cultural Project Management & Fundraising”; Sfax: “Sustainability & Green practices”
c) Participation in Mahallart & Hors - Lits Festivals

The selected participants will be divided into two groups. Six of the selected artists/professionals will have their residencies, creation and presentation of works in Mahallart Festival in Larnaka and another six in Hors - Lits Festival in Sfax. However, du ring the festival week, all artists are going to be invited to attend both festivals and the workshops taking place during the festivals.

2. Who can apply
Applicants shall meet the following criteria :
1. Are aged 18 years old or above
2. Have a good command of English

3. Are able to conduct international travel across the geographies of the programme: Cyprus or Tunisia
4. Regardless of their nationality, the call is open to individuals based in remote Mediterranean areas* from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain and Tunisia.
Applications from individuals who are not based in a country listed above will not be considered.
*The MedSEA project refers to remote areas as islands, rural areas and cities with less than 100,000 inhabitants (with flexibility depending on national context).
5. Are passionate about community - based art practices and socially engaged arts.
