At ExpoDubai, as part of the Ecoc Day, the first ever group game dedicated to the European capitals of culture designed by the Open Design school of the Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation was successfully presented.

Rita Orlando, Open Design School Project Manager, explains the content and objectives of the game.

“The ECoC Game is a laboratory of cultural geography, an interactive and fun experience aimed at bringing the players through an imaginary journey within the European Capitals of Culture to highlight the capacity of culture in “building the bridges, leaving no-one behind and living in balance”.

n 2021-22, the global pandemic heavily impacted arts and culture as most of the live cultural events were cancelled. For the first time in history, since its conception in 1985, there were no European Capitals of Culture in office during the second half of 2022, thus creating a caesura between the closing ceremonies of Galway and Rijeka 2020-21 and the opening ceremonies of Esch, Kaunas and Novi Sad 2022.

Simbolically in 2021, Matera 2019 took the lead in turning the spotlight on the European Capitals of Culture, which represent a wide and extraordinary benchmark of the transformative capacity of culture, at international level, organizing The ECOC day, a full-day event at Expo 2020 Dubai, on 30th October 2021.

The ECoC Day was a unique chance to provide ECoCs, for the first time ever, with a collective device to display their history and the people behind it: The Ecoc Game was designed with this purpose, thus representing the richness of those projects and a common tool in diversity. The Game will allow players to walk in different ECoCs’ characters’ shoes and to feel their mood while discovering historical data, curiosities and unpredictable events occurred in the different Capitals over the years. Therefore, the ECoC Game can be used not only for leasure but also for team buiding, allowing big organizations’members to exchange Roles and establish new social dynamics and hidden connections among them. Furthermore, players will have the opportunity to co-create a new game path each time they play, thus living a new experience over time”.

In line with the open culture approach of Matera 2019 and Open Design School, the Game will be distributed under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY-SA-NC), it can evolve over time and be adapted also to other mega events (e.g. Expo, Olympic Games, etc.).
