Portugal, Evora is the European capital of culture for 2027

Evora will be the European capital of culture for Portugal in 2027. This was announced today by the president of the evaluation panel, Beatriz Garcia, during a press conference in the presence of national, local and European institutional representatives.

To earn this title, these cities had submitted their candidacy: Faro, Funchal, Évora, Braga , Coimbra, Leiria (Rede Cultura), Guarda, Oeiras , Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Ponta Delgada.

Subsequently, 4 entered the short list: Braga, Evora, Aveiro and Ponta Delgada.

Evora, in 2027, will be the European capital of culture together with Liepaja, in Latvia.

The Portuguese Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva, during the press conference, announced that the other three cities that had entered the short list, Aveiro, Braga, Ponta Delgada, will be named Portuguese Capital of Culture for 2024, 2025, 2026 And that each of them will be assigned a contribution of 2 million euros from the government to continue working in the direction started.

In the past, Portugal has received the title three times: Lisbon, in 1994, Porto in 2001, and Guimarães in 2012.
