The bid for Cáceres 2031 has received the formal support of the Portuguese city of Évora to become European Capital of Culture. This support represents a significant boost from the city that already holds this title for 2027.
The endorsement was communicated through a letter sent by the president of the Évora 2027 Board of Trustees, Maria do Céu Ramos, in which she highlights the commitment of the Portuguese city—designated European Capital of Culture for 2027—to the cultural project promoted by Cáceres.
In her letter, do Céu Ramos highlights “the consistent and fruitful collaboration between Alentejo and Extremadura (…), a cross-border cooperation with clear benefits for their communities and their shared development.”
In response, the mayor of Cáceres, Rafa Mateos, publicly thanked them for this gesture, emphasizing the symbolic and strategic value of the support from a city with which there are “numerous similarities, a shared heritage, and deep cross-border roots.” He stated that this support is received “with honor, affection, and great joy” by the city and the entire municipal government team.
Mateos also underscored the special importance of this support coming from a city that will be a leading force in European culture in the immediate future. “In 2027, Évora faces a unique experience that will allow it to showcase its full cultural potential to the world, and whose legacy will undoubtedly be a benchmark for other European cities,” he affirmed.
Cáceres 2031 has also conveyed its best wishes to Évora for its complete success as European Capital of Culture in 2027, convinced that it will contribute to strengthening the Iberian cultural axis and the value of cooperation between neighboring regions. Furthermore, those responsible for the European Capital of Culture projects in both cities will collaborate on the development of joint projects. In fact, musicians from Évora already participated in the performance ‘Around Beethoven’s Ninth: Reconstructing Humanity’, held in Cáceres in December.
This new international support reinforces the European dimension of the Cáceres 2031 candidacy and consolidates its commitment to a culture based on collaboration, shared heritage, and a common European identity.
