In accordance with the calendar set out in the Annex of Decision No 445/2014/EU as amended by Decision (EU) 2017/1545, the title of European Capital of Culture shall be awarded in 2029 to one city in Poland and to one city in Sweden.
After Krakow (2000) and Wroclaw (2016) in 2029 it will be the third time of a European capital of culture in Poland.
the ministry of culture has published the call with the regulation intended for cities that want to participate in this competition (attached to this news). The aim of this call is to trigger applications from cities in Poland wishing to bid for the "European Capital of Culture" title for the year 2029 and to lead to the designation of one of these cities, that may be awarded the Melina Mercouri prize, funded from the respective Union programme supporting culture at the time of its award.
To date there are only two cities that have officially declared candidates: Białystok and Katowice with the metropolitan area.
"The cities of Poland wishing to apply for the European Capital of Culture title in 2029 shall reply to this call by filling in the application form in Annex 1 as well as the "declaration of honour" form in Annex 2. There are two questionnaires: one for pre-selection stage and one more developed for the final selection. Twenty paper copies and one pdf copy of each application (in English and potentially also in another EU official language) must be sent to the following postal address and e-mail address no later than 15 September 2023".
The candidate cities shall communicate in writing their intention to submit an application at the latest 14 August 2023.
"Applicants will be informed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland of the receipt of their application within 10 working days. By submitting an application, cities accept that their e-application at both pre-selection and selection stages be made public on the website of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland and the website of the Commission at the end of the selection phase. Cities interested in the title may obtain information at the information meeting to be organised in Warsaw in January 2023 (an exact date and venue will be specified later on the Ministry's website).
Cities interested in the title can obtain further information from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland and from the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission.
