In 2027, the European capitals of culture will be Liepaja (Latvia) and Evora (Portugal). Liepāja is a state city in western Latvia, located on the Baltic Sea. It is the largest city in the Kurzeme Region and the third-largest city in the country after Riga (European capital of culture in 2014) and Daugavpils. It is an important ice-free port.

On 8 May this year Liepaja has received a confirmation from the Register of Enterprises on the registration of the foundation “Liepaja 2027 Foundation” in the Register of Associations and Foundations, thus the Foundation has begun its legal activity and is now announcing a number of job vacancies.

Liepaja 2027, The summer is waking up, the lindens are waking their blossom, the wakening bells of the cathedral on Sundays, the waking waves of the sea in the distance, and the Awakening Garden is waking up again to welcome you. On 6 May, the opening “Wake up and OPEN” party of the second season of the cultural venue “Atmodas Dārzs”, will keep you awake all day long.

Portugal is one of the two Member States that are eligible to host the European Capital of Culture in 2027. In total, 12 Portuguese cities participated in the first round of the competition, which started on 23 November 2020. Four cities were appointed to take part in the second round and, after the final hearings, the Panel of independent experts recommended the city of Évora for the title on 7 December 2022.

Liepāja and Évora, European Capitals of Culture in 2027, strengthen cooperation. The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding was held on 14 April, at 10 a.m., at the Palácio D. Manuel, in Évora, as part of the State Visit of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Latvia to Portugal.
