Inspired by the idea of ​​cultural transhumance, these artist residencies foster a network of artistic exchange between Extremadura and Europe, promoting cooperation and exchange as tools for cultural and social growth.

Groups, spaces, and organizations in Extremadura interested in hosting European artists, creators, or curators in disciplines such as contemporary artistic ceramics, sculpture, film, contemporary circus, literature, opera, video art, dance, or gastronomy are invited to participate. The call for proposals includes two participation options: open proposal, in which spaces offer themselves as hosts and the Consortium, through a European Open Call, will select the most suitable artists; and direct proposal, in which spaces or organizations can propose a specific European artist, whether a resident or national of a European Union member state.

Selection Process

The selection process will give special consideration to projects that work with groups with less access to creative opportunities, whether for economic, social, or geographical reasons. Intergenerational initiatives that foster collaboration between different age groups, the clarity and coherence of objectives in relation to the values ​​of the ‘Transcultura’ program, and proposals that include non-Spanish European artists, thus strengthening the international dimension of the project, will also be taken into account.

Each residency must address at least one of the three core values ​​of Cáceres 2031: strategies for peace, creativity applied to contemporary challenges, and citizen co-creation. Priority will be given to projects that promote the direct involvement of the local community and culminate in a final public presentation. Collaboration between artists and hosts will always be voluntary and unpaid.

Residencies will last between 3 and 12 days and will have a maximum funding of €5,000 (including taxes), intended to cover travel, fees, and materials. If the venue does not have its own accommodation, it must allocate part of the budget to ensure suitable conditions for the artist during their stay. Selected proposals will become part of the Transcultura Residency Network, a platform aimed at consolidating an active, welcoming, and European-oriented artistic community in Extremadura.

Applications must include a description of the host space, the estimated duration of the residency, the languages ​​that can be used—with special consideration given to work in English or other European languages—and the expected level of community involvement. The application period will be open until December 7th, 2025, via the form here. 

The selected residencies will begin in 2026 and will be organized in phases over the following years.

The ‘Transcultura’ program is conceived as an invitation to rethink the role of art in contemporary society, fostering the creation of vibrant networks of collaboration between artists and communities. With this initiative, Cáceres 2031 promotes a contemporary transhumance of art in service of peace, creativity, and co-creation, strengthening the ties between Extremadura and Europe.
