In 2031 it will be the turn of Spain and Malta to nominate the European capital of culture. For Spain it will be the fifth time after Madrid (1992), Santiago de Compostela (2000), Salamanca (2002) and San sebastian (2016). The first city to have decided to apply for European capital of culture for 2031 is Burgos which yesterday launched its motto: Renaissance.
Burgos 2031 presents a European Capital project based on the 'Renaissance' of medium-sized cities as a development model. The main challenges of the candidacy are population loss, brain drain and ageing. Burgos 2031 propose the city as a laboratory of experimentation that addresses these arguments with culture as the axis of development.
“Burgos ECoC 2031 – says in a press release - will revolve its project around the motto 'Renaissance'. The motto reflects on the narrative of the medieval city that ventures beyond the city walls to embrace technical advances, culture and economic wealth, and european connections in the splendor of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
The same city that has founded its development on the industrial value and that now reflects on itself as a model of médium-size city, as a suitable scale for the European sustainable development, through the European Capital of Culture project and its desire to place culture as the axis of territorial development.
'Renaissance' means applying the principles of the cultural era to a médium-size city as Burgos, to establish a balance between economic development and the environment, competition and cooperation, people and technology, science and humanism. This 'Renaissance' will generate attractiveness and European values to the city; social cohesion, economic progress, citizen well-being, increase in quality of life, environmental improvement, creativity energy, integration, new publics, raise of cultural indistries, dialogue between the province and the city and a new perspective of contemplate the surrounding reality and the city itself”.
