After the previous editions, the Open Sound Project call aiming at creating and staging original collective performances based on an unexpected fusion of contemporary electronic music with ancestral sounds belonging to the rituals of the Basilicata tradition will start for the third year. The winner of the call, named OSA Producer, will participate in the 2021 edition of the Open Sound Academy, promoted by Multietnica in partnership with Sugar Music Publishing.

The winner will have the opportunity to live a unique experience of co-design and co-creation in the recording studio, in the rehearsal room and on stage as well, of a live show in close collaboration with the 2021 Guest Producers: Mattia Barro “Splendore” and Marco “Foresta” from the IVREATRONIC Collective and Matilde Ferrari aka “Plastica”. The Guest Producers and the OSA Producer selected by the call, led by Alioscia Bisceglia (Casino Royale) as Open Sound Ambassador, will take part in an artistic residency lasting from 23 rd to 29 th August in Basilicata between the Ionian Coast and the Pollino National Park, to work together and co-produce an unreleased live show called “OSA 2.1”.

The preview of the collective performance OSA 2.1, with the participation of traditional Lucanian musicians, will be held on Saturday 28 th August, in San Severino Lucano (Potenza), in the Pollino National Park, within the 25th edition of the Pollino Music Festival. Furthermore the premiere of the live show will subsequently be performed in November 2021 in the framework of the Milan Music Week, during the Linecheck Music Meeting and Festival, the most important music conference in Italy, which has been a partner of Open Sound since its first edition.

The OSA CALL is adressed to producers who want to experiment, “dare” and imagine new sound visions: the challenge is to recode ancestral sounds through electronics by creating an unpublished track starting from an open source repertoire, in free access, containing samples of related sounds to the rituals of the Lucanian in cooperation with tradition (bagpipes, cowbells, cupa-cupa ...). These sounds have been collected and listed in the Open Sound Library, during the Open Sound Festival project part of the Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 program.

The selection of candidates will be made by a qualified jury composed of the guest producers Splendore, Foresta and Plastica, and by Alioscia Bisceglia (Casino Royale; Open Sound Ambassador), Mario Cianchi (A&R Sugar Music Publishing), Jacopo Beta (Head of Booking Linecheck).

The artistic residency will last from 23 to 26 August 2021, at the “Al Verde” Officine Culturali located in Bernalda (Matera), close to the Basilicata Ionian coast, in collaboration with the Metaponto Beach Festival.

In the first stage, the OSA Producer selected by the call will work in the recording studio both with the Guests Producers and musicians of the Lucanian tradition. Starting from the selected track, the joint work will be arranged in order to become an essential part of the OSA 2.1 live show.

In the second stage of the residency that will last from 26 th to 29 th August, the artists will move to San Severino Lucano (Potenza) at the Mulino Iannarelli, in the Pollino National Park, sourrounded by nature, streams, refuge and mountain paths.

The collective performance OSA 2.1 and its reharsal will take place in such an outstanding location. The same as the Suite OSA 2.0 performed last year in Matera, the live show preview will be staged on August 28 th in the awesome landscape of the largest National Park in Italy, in collaboration with the Pollino Music Festival. The inspiring experience will continue in November when the OSA Producer, together with the guest producers and musicians of the Lucanian tradition, will perform the show OSA 2.1 during the Milan Music Week, within the Linecheck Music Meeting and Festival.

The 2021 guest producers

The OSA Producer will work with the guests SPLENDORE and FORESTA, co-founders of the IVREATRONIC collective together with Cosmo and Enea Pascal. The first one is an artist, performer, producer and queer DJ who plays full of bizarre ideas, such as tons of intensified Whatsapp plug-ins and vocals inside a crashed smartphone, swirling accelerated rhythms and glitches of a full cloud, and a first EP well reviewed in the specialized magazines.

The second one is a percussionist, DJ and world music lover, he produces ritual slowed dance under the pseudonym of Fabio Fabio and, in the name of Foresta, creates Paesaggi, a musical collage experience similar to a real sound bath.

The third guest from Sugar will be Matilde Ferrari aka PLASTICA, producer, polistrumentist and DJ who has already been working with Marianne Mirage, Splendore, Inoki, Laila Al Habash, Elasi, Kang Brulèe & Polezky (Gemitaiz, Achille Lauro, Mahmood) with Emanuele Mattozzi aka Emyk (Marracash, Ernia, Rkomi) and with artists such as Burro Studio dealing with sound design for brands such as Kappa, Swarovski and Vogue. Plastika is among the faces of Playback, the Spotify format dedicated to Italian producers, her talent has been appreciated by many professionals.

The previous editions

In the 2020 edition, the winners of the call, Cali Low, Malafemmina and Angelo Rosato Fanelli, worked with the guest producers Clap! Clap !, Stabber, Yakamoto Kotzuga, Alioscia Bisceglia and the orchestra conducted by Giorgio Mirto to build up the final performance Suite OSA staged at the Terrace of Palazzo Lanfranchi in Matera.

The Open Sound 2019 call winners were AlèFe and DadeMatto while the Guest Producers Night Skinny, Paolo Baldini, Clap! Clap !, Dardust, go-Dratta, worked with the sample sounds from the library to create unreleased tracks, made exclusively for Open Sound Festival and included in this official playlist.

The 2021 OSA call is open until August 7, 2021.
