Volunteers from Matera 2019 learn to “fly”

“Everybody of us has got a pair of wings, but only who dreams, learns to fly” (by Jim Morrison)
The volunteers of the European Capital of Culture Matera 2019 were among those who dreamed most of all during the year 2019.

A year-long dream, full of emotions and enthusiasm. It was a special dream because it managed to survive after the year 2019, despite the pandemic, leaving a concrete and positive sign for the city of Matera through the birth of the "Volontari Open Culture 2019" Association.
Volunteers are now ready to enter in the world of cultural volunteering and take a flight. This flight will also be possible thanks to the “toolbox” that Matera-Basilicata2019 Foundation has decided to give to them.
In fact in a few days a training course called “Flight lessons”, promoted and organized by the Fondazione Matera-Basilicata 2019, will conclude. This training was born out of the need for volunteers to acquire information on specific topics in order to encourage and develop their skills.
The training included several sessions, both virtual and face-to-face, divided into two types of lessons: “Training Lessons” and “Pindaric Flying”. Each lesson was led by different “pilots” as national and international professionals.
Through the “Training Lessons” operational topics were covered such as: how to manage a third sector association, how to make agreements and organizational protocols and how to start a fundraising campaign.
Instead, through the lessons called “Pindaric Flies”, the topics were: what it means to be a team, how to work on social design and team building and how to communicate online and offline.
Ecoc News is the media partner of the last “Flight Lesson”, called “Future prospects”, an opportunity to build relationships with national and international organizations, such as the Italian Capitals of Culture, the ECoC Volunteer Coordinators Network, the International Theatre Festival of Sibiu, the Eu Japan Festival and the Volunteer Bridge Project, which deals with exchanges of volunteers from and for Japan.
The aim of the “Flight Lessons” project is to enable volunteers to become “pilots” of the next “journeys” and trainers for those who would like to learn more about the world of cultural volunteering.
This training course aims to strengthen the legacy of one of the most important projects of Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 that is the volunteers, leading them towards a stronger awareness of their role, as well as the impact that their activities and their behaviors can develop on the community.
The birth of a voluntary association is a strong response to one of the many social challenges of our time: individualism. In the future, the “Volontari Open Culture 2019” Association may prove to be a valuable support in promoting greater social and cultural inclusion in the territory.
At this point, we wish the volunteers a good flight!
