The Ponta Delgada – Azores 2027 bid for European Capital of Culture has launched the “Forces of Nature” photographic series, by the photographer Paulo Goulart.
The aim is to show that our nature is human, by showing people that build the culture of this place.
Who is he? The eternal, ubiquitous question to which he seeks to answer every day of his existence. He is someone who builds himself every day, a mixture of idealization and edification. He is an Azorean, from São Miguel, a professor and a writer. He is Pedro Paulo, as his childhood friends would say.
The space in which he was photographed is emblematic, because it is associated with the history of its parish, Ginetes, full of symbolism and legends, and because it is part of his childhood imaginary, a space for games and mysteries. "It's magical and in it we find the inspiring freshness of the island." Precisely because of these condiments that it has, it was also a chosen space for some scenes from his historical novel “Cinzas de Sabrina”.
Paulo Goulart was born in 1973 on the island of São Miguel. In 1999, he joined Ar.Co – Centro de Arte & Comunicação Visual, in Lisbon, where he completed his professional photography course. He begins by working as an assistant to professionals with consolidated careers in fashion and architectural photography, such as João Carlos and Ana Paula Carvalho.
Then, and for more than a decade, he worked as a scene photographer for TVI's Plural and SIC's SP Televisão. He has also worked as a scene photographer in theater, cinema and in several television series, including Netflix's “Glória” (recently released).
Currently, he dedicates himself mainly to architectural and fashion photography. His work in the field of architectural photography has already earned him several highlights on Archdaily. He has also collaborated with several publications and specialized magazines, including the SATA in-flight magazine. He was the guest photographer for issue nº2 of the literary magazine grotta.
In September of this year, he opened his first solo exhibition, at the Carlos Machado Museum, in São Miguel, entitled “Santos da Casa Fazem Milagres”, where he presents the guardians of the small chapels scattered around the island.
