From 5 to 10 May 2025, Materahub kicks off the Europe Week, a series of of cultural and educational events designed to honour the founding values of the European Union. The symbolic heart of the initiative will be Europe Day on 9 May, which this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the historic proposal presented in 1950 by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman that laid the foundations of European cooperation.

A week full of screenings, workshops, exhibitions and debates will animate Matera, European capital of culture 2019, renewing the commitment that has always distinguished the Materahub Consortium in promoting the principles of the European Union with particular attention to the role of the younger generations, who will be called upon to discuss crucial issues such as the Ventotene Manifesto, the future of Europe and the challenges of contemporary society.

It starts on 5 May with a screening dedicated to schools of the docufilm “Deforestation Made in Italy” by Francesco DeAugustinis at the Casa per Ferie Sant'Anna, a story that questions the concept of Made in Italy ‘excellence’, investigating dark corners of a globalised production system.

On the same day the Maia exhibition will also be inaugurated at Palazzo Lanfranchi. Horizon project www.maia-project.eu with the aim of raising awareness to the challenges of climate catastrophe. The exhibition will be open every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Tuesdays: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.).

It continues on 6 May with two afternoon events both at Palazzo Lanfranchi Palace. The first is dedicated to the presentation of EntreComp4Transition, a project dedicated to the training of figures for the ecological transition, followed by a workshop by Futures Design Education, which invites visitors to rethink the accessibility of public spaces, including those of the museum itself. On 7 May, at 5.30 p.m. at the Cinema ‘Il Piccolo’, will be screened the short film ‘Erasmus in Gaza’, winner of the David di Donatello, which recounts the experience of a young Italian doctor who was the first Erasmus student in Gaza. It continues on 8 May with an orientation workshop organised by Eurodesk Italy dedicated to EURES, the European programme for transnational job mobility.

On 9 May, on the occasion of Europe Day, the programme goes into full swing with a day entirely dedicated to dialogue on European identity. It starts at 5 p.m. at Il Sicomoro with the creative workshop ‘Europe: I love you or I don't love you? during which the participants will create a fanzine inspired by the Ventotene Manifesto. At 19:00 they move to the Tower Art Museum (TAM) for the meeting with Marco Di Liddo, Director of CeSI, who will present his latest essay ‘The challenge of the third way: Europe in the global storm’. Europe Week closes on 10 May, again at TAM, with the presentation of the book ‘Inside Future Career: your success in a changing world’ by Claudio Venezia, at 7 pm.
