In 2031 it will be the turn of Spain and Malta to nominate the European capital of culture. For Spain it will be the fifth time after Madrid (1992), Santiago de Compostela (2000), Salamanca (2002) and San sebastian (2016). One of the first city to have decided to apply for European capital of culture for 2031 is Burgos with its motto: Renaissance.
The call for cultural projects of Burgos European Capital of Culture 2031 has closed with a broad participation of the local artistic network, which has presented 34 proposals that bring together creators from 14 European countries.
The ideas collect a rich variety of artistic disciplines. Six of them are musical in nature, three are from the audiovisual field, one from architecture, two from the world of videogames, three from performing arts, one from literature and 18 from plastic arts with multidisciplinary interventions. The Society for the Promotion and Development of the city of Burgos, the municipal entity in charge of coordinating the candidacy work for the European Capital of Culture, published the call last May.
A selection committee will choose ten projects in the first days of September, which will have a budget of 14,000 euros each for their artistic execution. Among the criteria established in the bases, it stands out that the proposals should include collaboration with local artists and professionals, social groups, neighbors and the artistic reinterpretation of the city's public spaces. The participation of European cultural actors was a mandatory requirement, especially from cities that are candidates for European Capitals of Culture or have been designated. The ideas had to integrate the argument lines of the candidacy with a perspective of the city based on inclusion, sustainability, hybridization with the trade and hospitality industry, social integration and public spaces as a cultural artifact.
The objectives of this initiative are to strengthen the European dimension of the city's cultural proposals, reflect on common European values and generate active participatory processes that consider the citizens of Burgos not only as spectators.
