A boutique festival in two unique and immersive locations, which from Basilicata looks to the sound of tomorrow. From 27 July to 3 August, Open Sound Festival returns to Matera, European Capital of Culture in 2019, and to the Pollino National Park, also in the Basilicata region, with James Holden, Bombino, Venerus (dj set), Thru Collected, Fossick Project (Marta Del Grandi & Cecilia Valagussa), Vladimir Ivkovic, Paolo Angeli and other names.

A festival that incarnates and narrates the idea of Land Music Experience with its investigation of the landscape and territories made through sound, rhythms and ancestral rituals that reveal themselves to be full of the future. This is demonstrated by a lineup of artists who love to take unexplored sound paths:

"The context oozes with history and stories, with exchanges and crossings between different peoples and customs. The music follows this narrative, all the names on the bill have travelled and assimilated sounds in their short and long careers. In the line up there are echoes of natural scenery, vinyls that have filled suitcases returning from trips overseas, mirror balls reflecting the lights of the Bosporus, splinters of Africa, thoughts and reflections cleaned from the sand of Morocco, selections and flows of ancestral and contemporary rhythms that are born in Berlin and return home to Matera,' says Alioscia Bisceglia, Artistic Director of Open Sound Festival 2024.

The programme starts on Saturday 27 July in San Severino Lucano (Potenza), at Mulino Iannarelli, in the mountains, amidst the greenery and under the skies of the Pollino National Park, where the marvellous avant-garde of Paolo Angeli's guitar-orchestra and the travels of the famous Tuareg guitarist Bombino will vibrate.

From Wednesday 31 July to Saturday 3 August, on the other hand, we move to Matera, at Le Monacelle, a charming former convent in the historic centre of the City of the Sassi, with a view of the marvellous Parco della Murgia Materana. Opening, on 31 July, are the afro-futurist notes of Raffaele Costantino, followed by the set of a flagship of resistant clubbing, namely Serbian DJ Vladimir Ivkovic. The evening will also see the awarding of the OSA - City of Matera Prize, already assigned to Dardust (2022) and Elasi (2023). The following day, Thursday 1 August, it is the turn of Fossick Project (Marta Del Grandi and Cecilia Valagussa), Italian dub reference Paolo Baldini Dubfiles and French duo Ko Shin Moon. On Friday 2 August, an unmissable date with Thru Collected, a Neapolitan collective considered by the media and the public to be among the best names of 2023 and, on the same evening, Venerus (DJ set), a leading artist on the Italian scene. Also on stage will be Federico Nitti, a sound and visual designer of Lucanian origin with high-level international experience.

Closing the Matera programme on Saturday 3 August are Leila Rufus, the Dadub duo, and the eagerly awaited live performance by British DJ and producer James Holden.

Attached to this news item is the press release with the full programme.

"Once again this year, the aim is to host artists who address audiences predisposed to listening and in-depth study, people animated by a view of participation not conditioned by the mainstream, offering them a proposal that hosts the avant-garde of the Euro-Mediterranean scene and an experience that remains firm in the search for dialogue between territories, tradition and the future," says Nico Ferri, General Director of Open Sound - A Land Music Experience | Reliving Origins.

The news in 2024 is that the project takes another step forward in its investigation and revolution on sound with Open Sound's first record production, to be released on vinyl and digital, in collaboration with Hyperjazz Records. This production is the restitution of the journey made in 2023 with the OSA project in which innovation and origins dialogue through a call, a co-creative residency and a final unreleased performance that has finally been recorded on disc, to embellish and fix a significant step along the road traced so far.

The disc will be presented during Open Sound Festival 2024.

After the first edition in the context of Matera European Capital of Culture 2019, Open Sound has grown, attracting the attention of insiders, musicians, producers, DJs, music lovers and cultural tourists, as one of the most interesting formats on the current scene.

"This is confirmed by the fact that Open Sound, with its OSA project - which creates new musical repertoires and stages unprecedented collective performances based on the dialogue between contemporary and traditional sounds - has also been replicated outside Basilicata. Both in its entire project structure and with its original shows and sets presented, in recent years the project has landed in Milan (Linecheck Music Meeting and Festival), Turin (_resetfestival), Saluzzo (APM Scuola di Alto Perfezionamento Musicale), Naples (Maschio Angioino), Bari (Basilicata Feee To Move), and has also arrived abroad (Hong Kong, Asia Cultural Co-operation Forum, Dubai, Expo 2020),' concludes Alessandro Ottenga, Cultural Manager of the project.
