Lublin (Poland), will be the 2023 European Youth Capital. The news was announced on Saturday, 27 February, by the European Youth Forum.

This year, for pandemia, it was not possible to hold an awards ceremony, so the competition took place in a virtual format. Other finalists was Baia Mare (Romania) and Kazan (Tatarstan in Russia). Lublin is the first Polish city to hold the title of European Youth Capital.

Very important to the victory was the concept of resilience.

"As a European Youth Forum - say the organizers on their website - we believe in the power of the European Youth Capital to trigger positive change. But above all, we believe in the determination and resilience of young people to carry out this change and shape decisions made in their city.

There is no doubt that young Poles are facing many challenges within their own country, including serious human rights violations and discriminatory policies. The city of Lublin itself has found itself having to fight against the so-called LGBT-free zones that have been imposed on the region. There may be a long journey to Lublin, but the European Youth Forum will always support young people who are fighting for positive change within their communities”.

Lublin is the ninth-largest city in Poland and the second-largest city of historical Lesser Poland. It is the capital and the center of Lublin Voivodeship (Lublin Province) with a population of 339,784 (December 2019). Lublin is the largest Polish city east of the Vistula River and is about 170 km to the southeast of Warsaw by road.
