Only one year remains until Kaunas becomes European Capital of Culture 2022. In one year’s time, stories from the city’s forgotten past will find their voice in cinemas through the film Folds (Lithuanian “Klostės”), which takes Kaunas’s modernist architecture as its inspiration.
The "French Capital of Culture" label will distinguish, every two years, a commune or group of communes from 20,000 to 200,000 inhabitants distinguishing themselves by the support to creation, the valorization of heritage, the artistic and cultural transmission, the mobilization of residents, as well as the involvement of artists and cultural actors established in the territory.

Due to the effects of the coronavirus crisis, the European Commission has today proposed to give Rijeka (Croatia) and Galway (Ireland) the possibility to extend their year as 2020 European Capitals of Culture until 30 April 2021. The Commission also proposes to postpone the year in which Novi Sad (Serbia) is due to host a European Capital of Culture from 2021 to 2022 and the year in which Timisoara (Romania) and Elefsina (Greece) will hold the title from 2021 to 2023.
