Caceres 2031 flies to Malta to study and collaborate

By Press release Giovedì, 11 Settembre 2025

The general coordinator of the Cáceres European Capital of Culture 2031 Consortium, Iris Jugo, has traveled to Malta with the aim of establishing synergies and studying joint projects with the places in this country that—like Cáceres—are bidding for the European Capital of Culture 2031 title. With this visit, Cáceres becomes the first Spanish city to develop a mission in Malta within the framework of these bids.

According to Iris Jugo, when developing Cáceres' bid, "it is especially important to work and collaborate with representatives from other countries, both with cities that have previously been European Capital of Culture and with those applying to do so in 2031.” That’s the reason Cáceres is already working with representatives from Finland, Portugal, and Italy, and also Malta now.

During this trip to Malta, meetings have been held with representatives from Valletta, European Capital of Culture in 2018, as well as with the cities that will share the bid with the Spanish capital chosen for the 2031 title.

Jugo emphasizes that Cáceres has a lot in common with the Maltese bids, something that is good an important for promoting joint projects and shared strategies. In this regard, plans are underway for a visit to Cáceres by a Maltese delegation in the coming months.

The coordinator also emphasizes that “European dialogue is the essence of this Capital candidacy, and the people of Extremadura have always shown their generosity, openness, and willingness to embrace ideas and learn from others, making this candidacy a deeply shared European project.”

Cáceres 2031 aims to be a European laboratory where cultures meet to “transform the future through joint learning and the exchange of cultural agents, innovative ideas, and a philosophy based on a friendly Europe.”

“This trip to Malta is not just a meeting: it is the seed of a relationship that unites two territories that in 2031 will share the same cultural perspective. Cáceres and Malta have begun a journey together made up of shared projects, of artists who dialogue across borders, and of communities that recognize each other in their diversity,” adds Iris Jugo. Along these lines, she noted that "at a time when many alliances are forged through screens, Cáceres 2031 wanted to take a different step: meeting up, seeing each other, and shaking hands in person; because European culture is not just built on words, but on real gestures, presence, and trust".
